How is a stopcock replaced if it will not close?

The supply is isolated without the valve, either at the external boundary stopcock or by freezing the pipe either side of it. The seized valve is then cut out and replaced in a controlled way rather than forced while live.

  1. Establish which isolation route the property allows: the boundary stopcock at the property line, or a pipe freeze on the run either side of the valve.
  2. Close the boundary stopcock with a stopcock key where the chamber is accessible and serves this property alone.
  3. Freeze the pipe instead where the boundary valve is shared, buried under a slab, or itself seized. A pipe freezing kit forms an ice plug either side of the working area and holds it for the length of the job.
  4. Drain the section from the lowest cold tap and confirm the flow has stopped before any cut is made.
  5. Cut the seized valve out, clean and re-face the pipe ends, and fit the replacement with a drain-off point alongside it.
  6. Restore the supply, vent the run, and check every new joint under working pressure before anything is closed up.

Forcing a seized valve is the failure this sequence exists to avoid. The crutch handle shears the spindle before the scale on the seat gives way, and a sheared spindle leaves the valve permanently open with the water still running — the exact situation the householder called about, made worse.

What replaces it, and why not like for like?

A quarter-turn lever ball valve replaces a traditional screw-down stopcock. It resists the scale that seizes the original, operates in a second, and gives visible confirmation of its position from the handle angle alone.

A screw-down stopcock closes by driving a washer onto a seat through several turns of a threaded spindle, and every one of those surfaces is somewhere scale accumulates in a hard-water supply. A ball valve closes by rotating a bored sphere through ninety degrees, which wipes its own seat every time it moves and presents far less area for a deposit to bridge.

The position indication matters as much as the mechanism. A lever lying along the pipe is open; a lever across the pipe is closed, and that is readable at a glance by someone who has never seen the valve before. A crutch handle looks identical open and shut, which is why householders regularly believe a partly-closed stopcock is fully closed.

What if the stopcock is buried or boxed in?

It is exposed, replaced, and the access rebuilt with a removable panel. A valve sealed behind tiling or a fitted unit is a valve nobody operates, which is how it seized in the first place.

Three positions account for most of them: behind a tiled bath panel, inside a fitted kitchen carcass with no cut-out, and under a floor with boarding laid over the hatch. Each is opened at the smallest workable point, the valve replaced, and the opening reinstated as a removable panel or an access hatch rather than sealed again.

The rebuild is the part that stops the fault recurring. A valve behind a screwed panel gets operated twice a year; a valve behind grouted tiling gets operated never, and an unoperated valve in a hard-water supply is a seized valve within a few years.

How long does the water need to be off?

Between one and two hours for an accessible valve, including the refill and a check for leaks at the new joints. Buried or boxed positions take longer, and the making good is quoted separately.

The cut and the joint are minutes. The hours are the isolation, the drain-down, the refill and the pressure check, and none of them is shortened safely. A pipe freeze adds time at the start, because the plug has to form and be verified before a saw touches the pipe, and it releases naturally afterwards rather than being hurried.
