How is a water leak actually repaired?

Cut the pipe back to sound material either side of the fault, clean and re-face the ends, then remake the joint in the same material as the run. The repair is pressure-tested and photographed open before any boxing, floor or plaster is reinstated.

  1. Isolate the section at the nearest valve, and drain it from the lowest point on the run.
  2. Dry the pipe. A soldered joint made on a wet surface fails, and a compression joint made on a dirty one weeps.
  3. Cut out the fault and keep cutting until the wall of the pipe is sound on both sides of the opening.
  4. Clean and re-face the cut ends, removing the burr the cutter leaves inside the bore.
  5. Remake the joint in the material the run is made from, using a fitting rated for that material and that pressure.
  6. Refill, vent, and hold the section at working pressure long enough to load the joint properly.
  7. Photograph the joint open, then reinstate boxing, board or tile over a repair that has already been proved.

Why we do not fit a repair clamp

A repair clamp holds pressure against a fault it does not remove. It conceals the cause, corrodes at the contact face, and fails again without warning. We fit one only to hold a supply overnight when a part is unavailable, and we say so on the invoice.

A clamp works by compressing a rubber gasket over the opening, which restores the pressure boundary without restoring the pipe. Three things follow from that. The weakened metal stays in the run. Two dissimilar metals sit in permanent contact under a wet gasket, which drives corrosion at exactly the point already carrying the fault. And the failure, when it comes, comes without the weep that warned the first time.

The one legitimate use is a temporary one: holding a supply on overnight while a fitting is obtained, then removed on the return visit. Where that happens the invoice records it in writing, so nobody discovers a clamp inside a wall four years later and assumes it was the repair.

What makes a joint fail in the first place?

Three causes account for nearly every failed joint: movement in a pipe clipped too tightly to slide, an olive deformed by over-tightening, and a soldered joint made on a contaminated or wet surface. Pressure alone rarely fails a correctly made joint.

Pressure is the load, not the cause. A domestic cold supply in London runs at a pressure any correctly made copper or plastic joint carries indefinitely, which is why a joint that fails after eleven years failed for one of the three reasons above rather than because the mains rose.

Can a leaking lead pipe be repaired?

A lead supply pipe can be jointed, but a pipe that has leaked once will leak again along the same run. Replacement in MDPE from the boundary is usually the lower lifetime cost, and it removes the lead from the drinking supply at the same time.

Lead deforms under load rather than cracking, so it thins gradually and weeps at whatever point thinned first. The rest of the run has been thinning at the same rate. MDPE is medium-density polyethylene, the blue plastic pipe used for water supply since the 1970s, and a replacement run is laid from the boundary stopcock to the internal one in a single length with no buried joint.

What does a leak repair cost?

One fixed quotation covers an accessible joint remade in copper or plastic within the first hour. Buried, boxed or screeded pipework is quoted after the position is confirmed, because the opening and making good dominate the cost, not the joint.

How long does the repair take, and will you make good?

An accessible joint is remade within an hour. We reinstate boxing, floorboards and lifted tiles where they survive removal, and we say before starting where making good needs a separate trade — plaster and screed usually do.

The joint is the short part. Draining a section, drying it, opening access and reinstating access are the hours, which is why a fault behind a bath panel and an identical fault inside a screed floor are the same repair at very different lengths. Anything needing a plasterer or a floor screeder is named before the work starts rather than discovered at the end.
