How do I test my meter for a leak?
Close every tap, appliance valve and toilet stop tap. Read the meter and photograph it. Wait at least an hour, overnight if you can, using no water at all. Read it again. Any movement means water is escaping somewhere unseen.
- Close every tap in the property, indoors and out.
- Close the isolation valve on the washing machine, the dishwasher and any plumbed fridge.
- Close the stop tap on every toilet, so a passing flush valve cannot register as a leak.
- Read the meter and photograph the dials, including the smallest one.
- Use no water for at least an hour, and overnight where the household allows it.
- Read the meter again and compare it with the photograph rather than with a memory.
The smallest dial is the one that matters. A domestic meter carries a fine-resolution pointer or a red digit set that turns visibly on a flow far too small to hear, and a leak large enough to move the main digits overnight is already a leak large enough to have surfaced.
What if I do not have a water meter?
Close the internal stopcock and watch a pressure gauge on the boiler or an outside tap adaptor. A falling reading with everything closed indicates a leak. Without a gauge, the practical route is acoustic testing by an engineer.
A pressure gauge screwed onto an outside tap reads the mains pressure held in the property’s pipework. Closing the internal stopcock traps that pressure in the run between the valve and every closed outlet, and a sealed, sound run holds it. A reading falling over thirty minutes with nothing open proves the run is losing water somewhere.
The same test on the heating side uses the boiler’s own pressure gauge, which reads the sealed heating circuit rather than the cold supply. A heating gauge falling week on week proves an escape on the wet side of the heating, and it is a separate test from the mains one.
The meter moved — what does that tell me?
Water is leaving the system with nothing drawing it. That is a leak, not usage. Where it sits between the boundary and the property it is the owner’s supply pipe, runs continuously, and appears on the bill as well as in the ground.
The next test separates inside from outside, and it takes one further step. Close the internal stopcock and read the meter again over the same interval. A meter still turning with the internal valve closed places the escape on the buried supply pipe between the boundary and the building. A meter that stops places it inside.
Ownership follows that boundary exactly. The supply pipe from the boundary stopcock into the property belongs to the owner along its whole buried length. The communication pipe on the street side belongs to the water company, which repairs it at its own cost.
Could it be the toilet rather than a pipe?
Frequently, and it is the first thing to eliminate. A passing flush valve sends a silent stream into the pan and registers exactly like a buried leak. Isolate each toilet at its stop tap and repeat the test.
A modern flush valve seals against a rubber diaphragm that hardens with age and with scale, and a hardened diaphragm passes a thin, silent stream down the back of the pan where nothing is visible. Wiping the back of the pan dry with tissue and returning ten minutes later shows a wet track where a valve is passing.
Eliminating the toilets before booking a survey costs nothing and settles a large share of cases. An engineer arriving to trace a buried leak that turns out to be a flush valve has been paid to find a fault a stop tap would have identified.
How much water does a hidden leak waste?
A continuous leak the width of a pinhole loses hundreds of litres a day, every day, unnoticed. On a metered supply that is a rising bill; on an unmetered one it is saturated ground and eventually a subsidence question.
Continuity is what makes the number large. A dripping tap stops when the tap is turned; a buried pinhole runs for every one of the 8,760 hours in a year at whatever the mains pressure delivers. The consequence on an unmetered supply is structural rather than financial: saturated ground under a foundation changes how that ground carries load.
When is it worth paying for a survey?
When the meter moves overnight with the toilets isolated, and nothing is visible. At that point the leak is confirmed and hidden, which is precisely the condition non-invasive detection exists for.
Two conditions have to hold together. Confirmed means the meter test has been done properly with every outlet and every toilet closed. Hidden means the source is not visible after the obvious positions have been checked — under sinks, behind the bath panel, around the cylinder and at the appliance connections. A leak that is confirmed and visible needs a repair rather than a survey.
Where both hold, the survey report also becomes the document an insurance claim is assessed against. Trace and access, the clause paying to locate a concealed leak and reinstate what is opened to reach it, is engaged by that report rather than by the repair.
